Geophysical survey at Druminnor Castle

Sum awarded: £4,020

Druminnor Castle was the seat of the Forbes family who were influential in north-east Scotland in the 15th century. The castle was slighted in 1571 and repaired a few years later. Though parts of the castle still stand, including its striking great tower, Druminnor was originally much larger and was built over and earlier medieval settlement.

The Bailies of Bennachie and the University of Aberdeen have been running the Bennachie Landscape Project for several years, investigating the castle. We are funding a geophysical survey to establish the location of buried remains. This will help with plans to excavate the base of the tower, and untangle the mystery of two linear features discovered through excavation – finding out how far they extend and how they relate to the castle.
